Default Barbara Howe 87, Found in trunk

MONROE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say the body of a missing 87-year-old southern Ohio woman was found in the trunk of her car in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Monroe Police Chief Gregory Homer said Barbara Howe's body was found Thursday in the trunk of her Cadillac STS parked in a lot in Middletown. Howe, who lived in a retirement village in Monroe -- between Dayton and Cincinnati -- had been missing since Sunday.

Authorities would not say how long her body was in the trunk, how she died, or why the car was parked there.

Howe lived alone in a cottage at the retirement community, and there were no signs of foul play found there.

Monroe police are scheduled to discuss the case in a 1 p.m. press conference today. The Enquirer will cover it and update this story as soon as new information is released.Multiple local agencies and the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation are working on the case, he said

The events leading to the discovery of Howe’s body began around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, when a Middletown police officer reported finding her car at an apartment complex in Middletown. That Wood Ridge Drive location is about a mile away from Howe’s residence on Paxton Circle in Monroe. The Middletown officer knew to be on the lookout for the red 2005 Cadillac because Monroe police had issued public alerts that Howe and her car were missing Tuesday.

Police investigated and learned that a friend from church had visited Howe on Sunday, Curlis said. The friend said she left Howe’s home around 4:30 p.m.

About an hour later, a political email was sent from Howe’s computer – and that was the last sign of her until Thursday, Curlis said.

Barbara was as sharp as a tack.
She was a meticulous schedule maker, and was very independent.
Her car was flawlessly taken care of, and she kept in touch with people continuously.

This is just terrible.

No, her family and the people from the retirement village have been talking. They paint her as a woman who had her crap together.

There was no foul play at her indepenent living facility...does not say anything about the car though. kwim?

where is her purse? the keys to the car etc.

Doesn't even tell if she was injured or robbed....

some locals think she stalled, got confused and got in the trunk to stay warm----

I personally am not comfortable with that, in light of how many people are praising her abilities and mental clarity at that age.

Wesselman said he reported his mother-in-law missing .
Wesselman said he reported his mother-in-law missing to Monroe police on Tuesday after going over to Howe’s house and finding her gone. Doors to the house were locked.

Police say nothing was missing except Howe, her purse, cell phone and red 2005 Cadillac. There were no signs of a struggle or a break-in, they said.

Kappers, executive director of the retirement village, said he has been meeting in small groups with residents trying to reassure them that whatever happened to Howe did not occur at Mount Pleasant and that they were safe.

Even if she was not impaired by her age, hypothermia can affect mental clarity also. Though, since they are now investigating her death as a homocide, ther may be other information that they are not releasing yet.

hypothermia? I thought it was like 70 degrees the day she went missing... anyhow. And her car was parked the same day she was reported missing, just no one from the apt complex called police about the car----She was clearly murdered...what has not been reported, is if she was robbed. I think some young female is behind this...using the guise of "neediness", and Barbara, ever willing to help, was lured into a bad situation.... just speculation on my part...
