Teleka Patrick, 30, a medical resident from Kalamazoo, has been missing since the evening of Dec. 5, 2013, when she was dropped off at her car in the parking lot of Borgess Medical Center on Gull Road. Patrick's gold 1997 Lexus ES300 was found that night in a ditch along westbound I-94 near Portage, Ind. Patrick graduated from medical school this past spring in California and has been in Kalamazoo since July for the first of four years as a medical resident in psychiatry with the WMU School of Medicine.

Teleka Patrick case: 6 things we know and 4 questions still unanswered

KALAMAZOO, MI – Matthew Radler had no idea his conversation with Teleka Patrick last Dec. 5 would be one of the last she would ever have.

Patrick asked Radler for $100 and a ride downtown to the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites from Borgess Medical Center, where the two worked as residents in Western Michigan University's school of medicine. He obliged.

Radler couldn't help but notice the high pitch in Patrick's voice, her rapidly blinking eyes. She told him she planned to meet a man at the Radisson and she asked him about going to church.

Patrick told Radler not to attend the morning prayer group at Borgess.

She asked him if he believed in demons.

"Matthew said Teleka was acting strangely and seemed confused while in (his) car," Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Sgt. Juvon Johnson wrote of his Dec. 7 interview with Radler, part of a 48-page sheriff's office report obtained by the Kalamazoo Gazette under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.

The report documents interviews with co-workers like Radler, as well as friends and family of Patrick, who talked of the promising young doctor's fragile mental state and her infatuation with a Grand Rapids minister in the months leading up to her Dec. 5, 2013 disappearance and drowning in an Indiana lake.

The last image Radler has of Patrick was her walking into the Radisson that night. He promptly left, not knowing Patrick would try unsuccessfully to get a room at the hotel then catch a ride from a courtesy shuttle driver from the hotel back to her car at Borgess.

Her 1997 Lexus ES300 would be found a few hours later abandoned in a ditch off westbound I-94 in Porter, Ind. Patrick's body was found April 6 in Lake Charles, a small body of water a short distance from where her car was found by Indiana State Police. An autopsy showed the 30-year-old drowned.

The case of her disappearance and death, at this point, remains open for investigators in Indiana as they await the results of toxicology tests.

But the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office report sheds some light on what police knew as their investigation progressed, as well as some insights about key questions in the case. Among them:
•In December 2012, seven months before coming to Kalamazoo from Loma Linda, Calif., Patrick began contacting Marvin Sapp, a nationally known recording artist and minister at Lighthouse Full Life Center in Grand Rapids, via Facebook. The contact through the social media website continued until August 2013.
•Patrick told staff at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine she came to Kalamazoo "especially for her fiancé in Grand Rapids."
•After she arrived in Kalamazoo in July, questions about Patrick's mental state began almost immediately. Staff at the medical school told Detective Sgt. William Sparrow of an incident July 10 that prompted a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer to call the school. During the incident, the officer said Patrick "frantically flagged" him down at the corner of Howard Street and Oakland Drive and told him "someone was after her." Sparrow said in his report, "The officer felt that she had mental issues."
•The incident prompted staff at the medical school to have Patrick take a drug test. The results were negative, according to Sparrow's report, and Patrick told staff she flagged the officer down because she had been "followed by a security guard and had been freaked out."
•Sheriff's investigators first learned of Sapp on Dec. 9 when, after running Patrick's name through the Law Enforcement Information Network, they discovered he had taken out a personal-protection order against her that September. Sparrow and Capt. Mike Bowen interviewed Sapp on Dec. 23 at his Grand Rapids church.
•During the Dec. 23 interview, Sapp told detectives he never responded to any of Patrick's Facebook messages and provided Sparrow and Bowen with a thumb drive that contained 490 pages of photos and messages he had received from Patrick via e-mail and Facebook. "(Sapp) advised that he has other women similar to Teleka that idolize him, that do come to his church ... however that (Patrick) crossed the line when she went to his house when he was not there and talked to his children," Sparrow wrote in a report of the interview.
•A police search of Patrick's cellphone turned up "unusual" text messages, including an exchange with a friend in California from October during which Patrick said: "She was driving when a large animal struck her vehicle. Patrick later learned that Marvin Sapp had possessed the spirit of the animal and caused the animal to attack her car," Detective Sgt. Jeff Baker wrote. "Patrick went on with several other messages concerning demons and spirits that did not appear to make any logical sense." The friend with whom Patrick was speaking, Chane O'Bannon-Johnson, who attended school with Patrick at Loma Linda University in California, later told Baker that she noticed a decline in Patrick's behavior in the middle of the summer of 2013 and that "it all began about the time Patrick began attending the church in Grand Rapids."
•Sparrow later interviewed Patrick's brother, Matthias Patrick, on Dec. 11 at the sheriff's office. According to Sparrow, Matthias said their family was not close-knit and that he did not know his sister "in-depth," but that he was the "closest to knowing her." He said his sister first spoke of Marvin Sapp about 18 months before her disappearance and told him that Sapp "was going to be her husband."
•Irene Patrick, Teleka's mother, gave Sparrow similar information Dec. 16, telling the detective her daughter had come to Kalamazoo to be near Sapp, "who was her fiancé." Sparrow said in his report, "Mrs. Patrick made it quite known that she believed that (Sapp) had something to do with this," however, Patrick's sister, Tenesha Patrick told Sparrow she did not believe her sister's contentions that Sapp was her fiancé and "would not believe things that Teleka would say unless she saw it for herself."
•Nate Militzer, the courtesy shuttle driver from the Radisson who gave Patrick a ride to Borgess on Dec. 5, told Sparrow in an interview Dec. 20 that Patrick initially told him she wanted to go to Borgess to get something from an office and then return with Militzer to the hotel. However, after they arrived at Borgess, Militzer told Sparrow, Patrick told him, "I'm not going to be able to go back with you" and "Please do not tell anyone we did this." He then watched as Patrick ran into the hospital parking lot toward Gull Road. Moments later, he saw the lights of a car come on and the car, which he believed to be a Toyota, backed up out of a parking space.
•Sheriff's detectives later learned that from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, Patrick had been driving a loaner car from Hansen Collision in Kalamazoo. Among the items sheriff's Sgt. James Dunlop found during a Dec. 12 search of Patrick's car, which was being held by Indiana State Police, was a receipt from Hansen dated Dec. 2 and signed by Patrick. Dunlop said in his report that the receipt had on it in bold letters, "Your vehicle is unsafe to drive for the following reasons: Prior collision damage; current collision damage; other – nail in the tire."

After the body was pulled from the Indiana lake, police were all but sure it was Patrick even before they had confirmation from the autopsy. The clothing matched what she was wearing the night she disappeared and a car key found on the body worked in the ignition of Patrick's Lexus. There were no signs of foul play found during an autopsy and Patrick's death was ruled an accidental drowning.

Though police worked for months to find her, checking on reports of possible sightings and even inquiring of the U.S. Border Patrol to see if she had tried to leave the country, Patrick was found April 6 by a fisherman just a short walk from where her car had been found along I-94.

On April 16, Sparrow closed out his investigation of Patrick's disappearance finding that she "left the Kalamazoo County area on her own free will."

"I request that this Missing Person case be closed," the detective wrote.

The article explains so many things now and for me is confirmation of what I had thought all along. I sure hope this will put to rest why Marvin Sapp did not feel the need to say anything more and in many ways explains why LE was as quiet as they were.

Yes. I will admit that I viewed Marvin with a skewed eye. I was wrong. Poor young lady had so much to offer this world. Sad that she didn't get treatment.

I agree...

It is interesting to read her mom believed her, but her siblings knew she had delusions.

Also that he school HAD noted that she had unusual behaviors and ruled out drugs, at least once...
She must have been terrified, to believe demons were after her and that a human could posess an animal to hurt her... and to be involved with science, there must have been one hell of a mental war going on inside of her.

TY so much for posting this gracehatter

I wish the school would have forced her to have a mental health clearing as a condition of continuing her residency.

I totally agree. I never thought though that she had met up with foul play and always figured she was somewhere nearby where her car was found. Sapp didn't have any motive to harm Teleka, and he did everything through the proper channels to keep himself and his family safe from her. I guess we'll never know what happened in her mind while she was at Loma Linda for her to believe she was engaged to Sapp. And sadly she never received the treatment she needed even though her behavior was odd at the new medical school. moo

I agree. I wish she had been made to get treatment. This seems to be the only way Teleka would have gotten better hopefully. The only one that really acknowledged her mental illness was her ex-husband who still seemed to care about her. It had to be very hard living with such a delusional person day in and day out for as long as he did.

I think her mental illness went unchecked for many years. I am not surprised to find out that she was not close to her family. I always felt they really didn't even know her. She really wasn't around them much since she left CA after high school. But even at a distance her brother and sister knew she had major issues. I guess they felt because she was an adult there wasn't much they could do to help her if she did not want help.

Poor Teleka. She must have been in so much mental pain and to think all this time she was surrounded by Mental Health professionals.

But who would know she was so ill but had achieved so very much.

I always thought Sapp was involved in some way. I guess I was wrong. He too was a victim.

A sad ending to a promising young life. Rest in Peace Teleka. Perhaps now you are at peace.

I agree, I think her illness was there for quite some time, and it doesn't surprise me either that she wasn't close with her family. People who are trying to hide their inner anguish usually aren't, maybe for fear that they'll be less than perfect in the eyes of those who love them. It's not unusual either for somebody in such a state to latch onto a fantasy, in this case, it was Sapp. In her mind, the relationship she fantasized with him was real. Maybe she also self-medicated in order to function in her studies and residency. In the end though I think she was off all meds and the "demons" took over causing her erratic behavior that night and ultimately her death. It's just very sad. She was an intelligent woman who could've had a long, productive life. moo

Two things about this case struck a cord with me. How and why she drowned ... I do believe she landed up in the water accidentally and did drown. My own step dad nearly drowned in a swimming pool on New Year's Eve when, after a lot to drink, he decided to go for a swim. He dived into the pool but did not surface. Fortunately there was a young man at the party who had not been drinking and he dove into the water and pulled my dad out from the bottom of the pool. My dad was an excellent swimmer but a combination of a lot to drink and extremely cold water landed up with him losing consciousness very quickly and he just sank to the bottom of the pool.

As for Teleka's mental health, I have suffered from depression and multiple suicide attempts for years. A few years ago, my depression got really bad and my doctor referred me to a psychologist but she couldn't help me because she cannot prescribe meds and she, in turn, referred me to a psychiatrist. He is an amazing psychiatrist and, for the first time of what I can remember in my 60 years, I have not needed medication nor been depressed in 2 years now. We were invited to an art gallery opening subsequent to me no longing seeing the psychiatrist and, as luck would have it, he and his wife were guests there too. Neither they nor us knew anyone there so we gravitated toward one another. A week later we got an invite to supper at their home and landed up discussing my mental health. At some point in time his wife said "Chris tell Lee about your own mental health issues" and he (most embarrassedly - is that a word) told me that he is probably one of this biggest "nuts" he's ever come across. He is Bi-polar and he said that most of his colleagues aren't exactly the most healthy when it comes to mental health. I fear this may well have been Teleka's problem too.
