Crazy horrible things can happen in an instant but it seems like a ball couldn't go that far to not be able to still see the girls.
Hope they find her.
Ya know I was thinking the same thing. I don't see a "wall" that she would have had to go over to get the ball either. Now I am even more confused.

From the link:
Police say the mother went to retrieve a ball that bounced over a wall and when she returned two minutes later, Caleigh was gone.

snipped

Aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents of little Caleigh gathered at a family home in Gloucester on Thursday night.
The group joined together for support as they wait for any kind of word about little Caleigh.
Caleigh is described as a sweet little girl who is always smiling. She has light brown hair and blue-gray eyes, and was wearing a light pink T-shirt and dark pink capri pants when her family last saw her around noon on Thursday.
A massive search for the toddler was suspended on Thursday night until dawn on Friday.
Family members say Caleigh is not an adventurous toddler. They feel it is very unlikely that she went off on her own.
Authorities say they aren't ruling out anything.

Well, if she's saying that the ball went up and over that wall behind them that I suppose would be the cottage.....now that's some kind of beach ball. A baseball I could see going that far but a light weight plastic ball?
Who threw it that way? No 2 or 4 yr old could do it.
I hate to be all down on the mom in this, but I'm suspicious of this story.

Yeah, the story the father told his friend in phone call sounds more plausible to me.

Quote:
Reporter says a family friend Dan Rapp recieved (in video) a franic call from Caleigh's father. The father told Mr. Rapp that his wife was at the waters edge playing with the dog & a ball and the ball went into rough water and the mom went in the water to get it and when she turned around Caleigh was gone.

Oh..okay, so it was a tennis ball or something that the dog played with.
Yeah, that last quote from the family friend makes a lot more sense.
It really could only take a moment for her to be swept out.

Thanks Aubrey for the links

Here is another version of the story.

Quote:
State Police spokesman David Procopio said at a briefing Thursday evening that Caleigh was playing near a footbridge on the beach when her mother turned away to fetch a wayward ball that had gone over a retaining wall and into some tall grass. When Hammond turned back, Caleigh, age 2 years and 9 months old, was gone.

State police are continuing their search for toddler Caleigh Anne Harrison this morning, with roughly 10 divers and Coast Guard vessels in the water, troopers and canine units searching the ground and the state police air wing scouring from above, spokesman David Procopio said from the Cape Hedge Beach in Rockport.

Which makes me ask the question, how long was Caleigh missing before anyone noticed her gone?

I was just wondering the same thing.

If she fell into the water, I would think you would hear her screaming too, if they were not very far away from her.

seems to me that if she fell in the water under the footbridge and was swept out to the ocean, her body would've been found by now?

I wonder how close the road or parking is to that little footbridge?

Search for girl missing in Rockport

Reported by: Victoria Block Posted:

Updated: Today at 4:19 pm
Article/Video

ROCKPORT, Mass. (WHDH) -- K9 units searched the rocks at the far end of Long Beach based on the tides and the work of investigators on Friday. They continued their desperate search for 2.5-year-old Caleigh Harrison, who went missing on Thursday afternoon.

“We put a buoy with a weight attached -- approximately the weight of the girl -- in the area where we think she may have gone in, if in fact she went in the water and we’re following the path that buoy’s taken, to follow the tides and the currents. That buoy just ended up in this area -- this rocky area -- a short distance away here,” said one official.

Snip

Police said there were two parallel investigations being conducted following Caleigh’s disappearance, one involving a possible drowning, the other a potential crime.

Police, search and rescue, and other investigators set up shop behind the homes on Long Beach, not far from where the missing toddler was last seen playing with her sister and mother.

Friends and family were camped out at Saratoga Point, a critical point in the day’s search.

Snip

The tide was going out when Caleigh vanished in the few minutes it took her mother to retrieve a ball they had been playing with. But not being certain of whether it was two minutes or five has forced police to consider the potential for foul play.

“We have not ruled out the possibility that Caleigh was abducted,” Sate Police spokesman David Procopio said. “We have not found her anywhere yet, so we have not ruled out that there could have been a crime committed."

In the post right above your post the reporter says, without knowing if it was 2 minutes or 5 minutes before Caleigh went missing.
